How do you know its Diabetes?

When the glucose level in the blood is high and there is glucose present in the urine the patient is then diagnosed as a diabetic.

High Blood Sugar Level

Picture
If insulin is not being produced or recognized in the body then the glucose is going to continue to flow through the blood stream going unused.
A Glucometer can give you an accurate and current blood sugar level in just a few seconds. We can also test glucose on routine bloodwork in the clinic or at the lab.

Sugar in the Urine

There is so much glucose flowing in the blood, the body decides to get rid of it as waste via the urine. We can check for sugar in the urine with a test strip and have results in few minutes. We run a urinalysis to see if there is any crystals, signs of infection or ketones ( an extreme complication from untreated diabetes)

Clinical Signs

Common signs that an owner may notice include: Increase drinking and increased urination, increased eating but still loosing weight and/or muscle.  Your pet may also have a change in their behavior and energy.
Don't dismiss these signs if you are seeing them in your pet!

Diagnostics

As part of the diagnosis process we also rule out other conditions that could complicate treatment of your pet (such as kidney disease or a urinary tract infection). We check comprehensive blood work, Urine and also culture the urine (to see if there is a bacterial infection and what antibiotic works for that infection).
