Penn Hip is a great screening tool and test used to evaluate the hips of dogs.
It is routinely used for working and breeding dogs to evaluate their risk of hip conditions such as Hip Dysplasia (an inherited disorder) and Hip Osteoarthritis as they age. The results give breeders more information for informed selective breeding.
Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is the most commonly inherited orthopedic disease that leads to hip arthritis causing pain, stiffness, and diminished quality of life. There is no medical or surgical cure for CHD and it affects more than 50% of the dogs within some breeds especially in large breed dogs.
If a patient is found to show signs of a hip condition we can take proactive measures in their health care to hopefully slow its progression.
PennHip testing is a day procedure but requires the patient to be sedated.
